Welcome to the Eight For Each State US Geography tour. I am so glad you are joining us.

While our last state was the only state formed out of another as a result of the Civil War, Nevada was the only state admitted to the Union during the Civil War. Their flag proudly declares, Battle Born.

We took it easy with Nevada, our first state back after Christmas break. Our main project was mostly self-led and we went out for our food instead of preparing it ourselves. The girls enjoyed learning about this particularly angular state and hope you do as well!

1. S is for Silver: A Nevada Alphabet by Eleanor Coerr

WPinhen other resources and books are few for a state, the Discover America State by State series really pulls us through. With 26 different topical facts we always find somewhere to go with our state study after reading these books.

Other nonfiction series we use regularly are:

2. Silver Mining

Nevada is known as the Silver State, but gold is now the top precious metal money-maker. Check out these resources on the history of mining in Nevada and current mines.

3. Dam Project

PinRuth especially enjoys building projects. So, after she read You Wouldn’t Want to Work on the Hoover Dam! by Ian Graham, we experimented with building our own dam.

Now, I have to say, I didn’t spend a ton of time giving guidance on this project. It was more of a representation of a dam and how it works. So, here is a picture of ours. I would love to see what you all come up with!

4. Dat-So-La-Lee and Her Baskets

We found these baskets interesting when we read about them in S is for Silver: A Nevada Alphabet by Eleanor Coerr. Here are some more resources if you wish to explore this topic further.

5. Onion Rings

The United States Cookbook by Joan D’Amico suggested onion rings for Nevada. Because we are fortunate enough to live by a Cheddar’s, where an entire plate of onion rings can be had for no more trouble than a short drive and $5, we decided to go out!

8. M Is for Majestic: A National Parks Alphabet by David Domeniconi

Continue your study of the amazing national park system with this great book, which is similar to the Discover America State by State series.

List off the ones you would like to visit, talk about why we have land set aside as national parks, and marvel at the diverse plant and wildlife to be found all across our country.
